PictoXacobeo

PictoXacobeo is an Android communication companion for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, designed to help people who struggle with spoken or written language. The app lets users build messages from a large library of pictograms so they can request accommodation, order food, ask for directions, or interact with services along the route. Multilingual support includes Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, making it useful for international visitors. PictoXacobeo focuses on accessibility and simplicity so travelers with speech disorders, reading difficulties or language barriers can communicate confidently while on the trail.

Development Team

The project received significant support from the Tourism Agency of the Xunta de Galicia through the Xacobeo 2021 revitalization initiative, part of the O Teu Xacobeo program. The pictograms originate from the Government of Aragon and were created by designer Sergio Palao; these images are distributed under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. PictoXacobeo was developed to increase accessibility on the Camino and to help connect travelers across cultures and abilities.
